I've had my hand slapped by editors so many times for not putting motivation, emotion, or symbolic meaning directly on the page. And they're not necessarily wrong. But I do love a story that makes me work for all those things. Dialogue that creates a story question or forces you to think through various interpretations is my favorite type of dialogue.

YES. I often wonder what would happen if we trusted the reader a bit more in general!
